Gib Fixing & Stopping
We completed full house Gib fixing and stopping on Playfair Street, Caversham, covering five bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom, and laundry. The project involved uneven existing walls, detailed preparation, and careful finishing to create smooth, paint-ready surfaces. Despite challenging access and site conditions, we delivered a high-quality result while preserving the home’s original decorative plaster ceilings.
This was a big one. Full house Gib fixing and stopping on Playfair Street in Caversham. This included five bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a laundry. This job only involved the walls, as the ceilings had the original ornate decorative plasterwork which was being kept.
The Challenges
The existing walls had the old scrim and sarking behind them. The builder had planned back what he could, but the walls still weren't straight. This makes Gib fixing a little harder as you are shimming and packing to get things as flat as possible before you can even start stopping.
On top of that, access to the site was a nightmare. We had to hand cart every single Gib sheet in, which on a full house is a lot of board. Not the kind of thing you think about until you're actually doing it.
Getting It Done
We knocked out the Gib fixing over a weekend, then spent about a week on the stopping. Having the walls not straight meant more work with the stopping to get clean, flat joins. It's important not to rush this as it shows through once everything is painted.
